Consumer information on the environmental qualities and characteristics of products

The policy has the following objectives:

- make environmental information more accurate, clearer and more understandable

- respond to a strong citizen expectation and strengthen consumer trust

- foster the purchase of greener and more sustainable products

- push producers to better ecodesign their products and packaging

 In application the 2020 law against waste and for the circular economy, a decree was adopted on 30 April 2022, which provides for:

- from 1 May 2022, a ban on the use of some green claims for products and packaging that are too vague, such as “biodegradable” or “better for the environment” and their equivalents

- from 1 January 2023, certain manufacturers are obliged to inform consumers, at least electronically, about 11 environmental qualities or characteristics (repairability, recyclability, traceability, reuse, compostability, presence of hazardous substances, etc.);

The measure applies to some manufacturers and to some product categories, notably those subject to an EPR scheme.
