The Stanford Community Food Hub [AFFILIATED]

  • Published on January 3, 2018
Of the almost 5,000 people living in Stanford, more than half live in poverty and over 40% are unemployed. Through the 10YFP Sustainable Lifestyles & Education Trust Fund, a mobile app called Food for Us is being developed to connect producers to consumers with the aim of minimizing food waste. The app provides an opportunity to establish an enterprise/s that can access excess food, apportion this into this into food boxes and sell these to restaurants and other consumers.
The intention is to build on the network created through the Food for Us project, and establish a community food hub, from which entrepreneurial activities can be leveraged to uplift the community. This can include transportation of produce from buyer to the hub, hub to the consumer; cooking and chef training; small-business development; and a safe place to trade food. Research will be conducted to further understand the food needs of the community, and evaluate the impact of the project. Securing premises and overseeing the building for the Stanford Food Hub. Setting up a mechanism to collect excess food from producers using the Food for Us mobile application, and a wider network of food producers. Marketing the food box scheme and establishing a business process. Creating a soup kitchen/food dissemination center for the needy Chef training for two beneficiaries and a day of learning (20 beneficiaries) about nutritious food choices and preparation for community feeding cooks Capacity building workshop, day of learning and ideas exchange with the Worcester Food Hub for (7 – 10 core project members). - Nicola Jenkin, Director nicola@pinpointsustainability.co.za
