Workshop of the G7 Alliance for Resource Efficiency on Value Retention Policies

In 2015, G7 created the Resource Efficiency Alliance. This alliance is an international platform of which objective is to share best practices for using natural resources less, longer and better. The aim of this workshop was to highlight the best practices in terms of value retention policies and processes (with a focus on two consumer product sectors: textiles and electronics) and to reflect on how to facilitate scaling up. In 2015, G7 created the Resource Efficiency Alliance. This alliance is an international platform of which objective is to share best practices for using natural resources less, longer and better. The transition to an economy that is more circular and more efficient in the use of resources is indispensable in order to reach the climate objectives. The aim of this workshop was to highlight the best practices of the G7 countries in terms of product lifetime extension and value retention policies in the value chains (with a focus on two consumer product sectors: textiles and small high-value electronics) and to reflect on how to facilitate the scaling up such practices. Furthermore, the conclusions of this event can give shape to policy recommendations for national governments and international institutions. On the 19th and 20th of November 2019, participants from G7 and other nations, companies, civil society and research institutes came together in Paris to consider how to promote the scaling-up businesses models for consumer goods involving remanufacture, refurbishment, resale or repair and related product life extension (“VRP business models”). Informed by a series of presentations and panels from leaders in the field, participants reached a set of recommendations for international co-operation during group discussions.
